Frank Malara • Jul 21, 2020

There’s good news. New York State just launched a special rent assistance program. Eligible households will receive a one-time rental subsidy for up to four months rent, payable directly to the landlord.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Before March 1, 2020 and at the time of the application, the household income must be below 80 percent of the county’s median income , adjusted for household size.
  • Before March 1, 2020 and at the time of the application, the household must have paid more than 30 percent of gross monthly income towards rent. Gross income includes but is not limited to wages, child support, social security, and unemployment. The federal stimulus check is not considered income.
  • Applicants must have less monthly income in any month between April 2020 and July 2020, than they did prior to March 1, 2002 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

How do I apply?

You can apply online here or download the application form here . Foreign language guidance and applications are also available here .

The Rent Relief Program is only accepting applications for a two-week window; applications must be postmarked by July 30, 2020. It is prudent to apply as soon as you can.
